Session etiquette for musicians
A trad music session is a casual gathering where musicians play traditional folk or Irish tunes (depending on what kind of genre the musicians play), often in a pub. It's all about sharing songs, tunes and having fun!
Sessions are also a great way to learn new tunes and train your ear, especially if you are new to trad.
However, there are some basic courteous rules to respect.
Have a look at some session etiquette you need to know before joining in:
1. If you are a visiting musician, always ask the session leaders first if you can join in. Don't take anyone's seat, always ask if a seat is free before you sit down.
2. Respect the musician who is leading the tunes set and go with their flow on tunes and tempo—it's all about having a good time together!
3. Don't start a tune or sing a song unless the session leaders asks you to start one.
4. Try not to talk or look at your phone while a song is sung, or if you don't know a tune, just listen and enjoy!
5. Be open to picking up new tunes and styles from others, every session is different—it's a great way to learn and have fun!
Most importantly enjoy the music and the craic!
